Typographic Book Jacket

The objective of this project is to design a book jacket using only typography and colour to express the themes of the story.
This design is for the book Exhalation by Ted Chiang, a series of science fiction short stories, focusing on the title story and its ideas of fading, life, death, and inevitability by using fading text and representative colours.
Process
This project started with experimentation with concepts and typefaces to figure out the most appropriate treatment for the design.
The colours yellow and blue were chosen for the background, yellow respresenting light and life, and blue representing the universe and darkness. By using a gradient, the yellow fades into the blue, representing the key theme of life inevitability fading away.
Final Design
The final product features an appealing book jacket that accurately represents the themes of the story.
The tracked out type on the title emphasizes the idea of expanding and fading, while the rings of expanding type feature a key quote from the story with important words highlighted in yellow.
